Yin Yoga has the same intention as any other  yoga style - to help the body become more flexible and to help focus and calm the mind.  Yin Yoga directs the stimulation deeper than the superficial or muscular tissues and targets the connective tissues, such as the ligaments, bones, and even the joints of the body that normally are not exercised very much in a more active style of asana practice.

Suitable for almost all levels of students, Yin Yoga is a perfect complement to the dynamic and muscular (yang) styles of yoga that emphasize internal heat, and the lengthening and contracting of our muscles. Yin Yoga generally targets the connective tissues of the hips, pelvis, and lower spine.

My Yin Yoga teacher, Biff Mithoefer, calls it the "quiet practice".  He continues that it is a "non-striving" practice.  By this he means the long holds in a semi-relaxed state can only be practiced if the yogi accepts where they are physically and mentally.  The good news is once you practice Yin and feel the results both to the joints and to the mind you seek the calm that non-striving brings to us, and are able to connect with it more easily.
Yin Yoga has been proven to help not only the stiff and those stressed by day to day life but also sufferers of PTSD.
